FAQs

What are the goals of the CEO-OEC?

There is a lack of economics-related extracurricular opportunities for high school students. Therefore, we hope to:
‍
1) Inspire students' interest in economics + increase awareness of the significance and relevance of studying economics.
2) Foster students' growth by broadening students' understanding of economics and cultivating transferable skills like problem-solving, work ethic, and communication.
3) Discover, challenge, encourage, unite, and recognize students who demonstrate exceptional potential in economics.

Besides qualifying for the IEO, what can I win?

We will issue awards to recognize the following:
Top 5: Individual Ranking
Top 10%: National Finalist
Top 25%: Honour Roll

Who is this contest for and is it bilingual?

To be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- You are less than 20 years old.
- You were in high school for the 2019-2020 school year (recent grads allowed!).
- You have strong English proficiency (the CEO-OEC and IEO are only administered in English).

Do I have to pay to compete in the CEO-OEC or IEO?

There is no participation fee for the CEO-OEC or IEO.

How will the contest be run and why is the time so long?

The contest will be a "take-home" contest. A link to the problem set will be posted on the website homepage at 12 PM on August 8, and you will have 11 hours to type responses to each of the questions. Before 11 PM, you must email us a PDF of your solutions. The responses should only take you ~3 hours, but the longer time ensures nobody is stressed about or disadvantaged by technical difficulties.

How do I prepare?

We recommend you check out IEO's official Syllabus, which details what concepts students should know, sample questions, and recommended preparation resources for finance and economics. Keep in mind that we will test similar content, but not in the exact same format. Additionally, the CEO-OEC will not have a business case. Our primary recommended textbook is "The Economy" from CORE.

Who is organizing the contest?

Contest Committee:
Yuri Khoroshilov, professor @ University of Ottawa Telfer School of Management (Team Coordinator)
Vivian Zhang, undergraduate @ Harvard University (Team Leader)
Guilherme Pita, undergraduate @ University of Toronto and Gold Medalist for Brazil @ 2019 IEO (Team Coach)

Communications Committee (independent of the Contest Committee):
Elizabeth Zhu, Peter Zheng, Devlyn Sun, and Andy Wei
